I am Margaret Ostrander, and my Second Life (SL) avatar is Testy Outlander. I kept this blog while a Master’s of Library and Information Science at the College of St. Catherine/Dominican University for research during January – April 2008.
I was interested in what fuels SL residents to look for information, what they find useful and how they go about finding it. Specifically, I conducted interviews with Second Life users and observed how people pursue and use information there. At the end of April 2008, I presented the results of my research at a SL in-world event.
This blog represents my personal journal and musings throughout the research process. I hope you’ll comment on the blog or find Testy Outlander in SL. You can also find me on:

This research project was part of an independent study titled “Users of Virtual Worlds” supervised by Dr. Michael Stephens, faculty at Dominican University. Dominican University is in River Forrest, Illinois, U.S.A. However, I live in Minnesota (U.S.A.) and attended classes through Dominican’s partnership with the College of St. Catherine.

Hi!
I just wanted to say thanks! Some of your thoughts inspired me to get to terms with the methodological, practical site of fieldwork in computer-mediated environments.
Especially the idea of verbal fieldnotes while being “immersed” is perfect.
